A Blanket Condemnation of UoN Students by Potential Employers is Unwarranted

Opinion

By Jeremiah WAKAYA | @WakayaKE

The recent events that led to destruction of equipment belonging to MoSound Events at the University of Nairobi’s Chancellor’s Court are without a doubt regrettable and shameful. One would expect that demonstrations such as the one which led to destruction of MoSound equipment would be conducted in a peaceful manner, particularly when those engaging in such demonstrations are students from an institution of higher learning talk less of the University of Nairobi which prides itself as an unrivaled leader as far as higher education is concerned.

But this was not the case with students of the University of Nairobi expressing their grievances over a ban on cooking in halls of residence, claiming they had been exposed to exploitative food prices at varsity-owned food joints. They further alleged that the food joints did not have enough supply of food hence students were limited to food rations regardless of whether such rations were enough for them. And so, for a section of these students, the only way their voice would be heard was through demonstrations.

It is however the manner in which these demonstrations were carried out that raised eyebrows and escalated public anger against UoN with some employers threatening to impose a sanction on UoN-schooled graduates.

These disheartening remarks reminded me of my recent holiday at the coast following the indefinite closure of the university, where I was met with the hard question, “So why do you people riot?” This was the question posed to me by my mothers’ colleague who seemed to have had enough of these unpopular demonstrations by students from my university. Lucky for me though, this lady wasn’t so serious as I would later find out she was only trying to start a conversation with a colleagues’ son she had met for the first time. Lucky me!

We must however ask ourselves why it is that demonstrations by students at the University of Nairobi have increasingly become disruptive and synonymous with violence. One thing is certain and that is such demonstrations have a lot in common with how we demonstrate as a nation. You will agree with me that other public protests have equally seen properties belonging to innocent citizens destroyed.

While it may be true that the said MoSound equipment were vandalized following protests by a section of students, it is also a fact that not all students participated in the demos. Punishing all students is therefore unjustified and an action that will serve to destroy the lives of innocent peace loving Kenyans who are caught up in this growing public anger against an institution they find themselves in.

Any action against UoN students must therefore be targeted to those found culpable of the destruction suffered by MoSound. I would for instance support a ban on student leaders who have failed on several occasions to provide leadership and instead castigated and overseen massive destruction of properties to safeguard their personal interests. I would and will support sanctions on the university managers who despite failing to ensure that hooliganism is stamped out of our institution of higher learning, seamlessly secure appointments in key government parastatals upon retirement. These are the folks that head institutions that ought to ensure a smooth day-to-day running of operations in institutions they head whether as administrators or as student leaders; both of them and I mean both of them have questions to answer to the public.

Yes, there are people who must take responsibility for injustices committed in the name of University of Nairobi students but certainly not all of us.

A day after the much if not the most celebrated Valentines Day,Kenyans have taken to twitter in what appears to be a come back for all those who had varnished from the face of the earth or at least twitter to share their experiences.Well,if you thought this experiences are only about a huge ‘catch’ on the day when the country and especially Nairobi was painted in red then you got it all wrong.

ASYLUM SEEKERS

It appears some fellows had deserted their significant others on Valentines Day and sought for asylum elsewhere due to high expectations or say inability to meet the expectations. For this group of individuals,it was obvious that their soul mates remained adamant on the need to be taken out for a date despite being persuaded to ‘seek the kingdom first’.As a matter of fact, some churches in the city have been reported to have had a record high attendance that possibly be linked to an influx in asylum seekers who went to hid themselves ‘under the rock’.

and am thinking how to go about this. Sijui nimwambie haikua mm

BACK ON DUTY

However, that is not all that was.Team Mafisi is said to be reporting back on duty today after their obvious absence yesterday. You could perhaps be wondering why would a bona-fide member of the prestigious Mafisi Sacco be on strike on the Valentine Day or at least the eve thereof?Well, the answer to this question is simple. An average member of the Sacco would probably have something in the neighborhood of tens if not hundreds of concubines. Now,bearing in mind that hyenas are often associated with greed but also indecisiveness,it was difficult and in fact untenable to have all these dates taken care of.

Team Mafisi are back to their normal duties…

OMONDI POPS THE QUESTION

Meanwhile, the much celebrated Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi decided to seize the opportunity yesterday to propose to his Italian girlfriend Shantel Grazioli. The proposal which took place along the Kenyan coastline is seen as a bold move by the comedian who has often been interpreted as being vague as far as disclosing his status is concerned.concerned. Grazioli arrived in the country last year at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to a well choreographed dance led by her boyfriend and is said to be planning to relocate to Kenya.

MAKE-UP IS GODLY

And finally, the iconic Winners’ Chapel Nairobi auditorium was a beehive of activities yesterday when the newly posted Resident Pastor and Regional Overseer of the East African Region whose headquarters are based in Nairobi decided to spoil the youths and singles which mouth watering delicacies at a valentines dinner held at the church facility.

Pastor Joseph Ikechwukwu won the love of the youths with his insightful message on courtship and dating but more importantly what was described as a realistic approach to life when he supported expressed support to single ladies wearing make-up saying that make up is divine urging  single men and women to look good. The outspoken pastor further threatened to lecture any youth who would fall short of expectation saying young people must endeavor to look smart.

Scramble for Africa:Facebook set to Launch a Satellite

Facebook is to launch a satellite that will provide internet access to remote parts of Africa, the social network's founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced.

Facebook is to launch a satellite that will provide internet access to remote parts of Africa, the social network’s founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced.

In partnership with French-based provider Eutelsat, Facebook hope the first satellite will be launched in 2016.

“We’re going to keep working to connect the entire world — even if that means looking beyond our planet,” Mark Zuckerberg.

The project is part of Facebook’s Internet.org project, which has come under fierce criticism in some countries.

In some areas, particularly India, businesses reacted angrily to the plans saying it gave Facebook, and its partners, an unfair advantage in developing internet markets.

Internet.org is experimenting with different ways of providing internet to hard-to-reach places. Recently, the company told of how it was planning to use a custom-built drone to beam down connectivity.

‘Optimised for community’

This latest initiative looks to use existing satellite technology to provide affordable internet access.

“Over the last year Facebook has been exploring ways to use aircraft and satellites to beam internet access down into communities from the sky,”-Mr Zuckerberg.

“To connect people living in remote regions, traditional connectivity infrastructure is often difficult and inefficient, so we need to invent new technologies.”

In a statement, Eutelsat said users on the ground would be able to use “off the shelf” products to access the service when it launches in the second half of 2016.

“The capacity is optimised for community and Direct-to-User Internet access using affordable, off-the-shelf customer equipment,” the company said.

“Eutelsat and Facebook will each deploy Internet services designed to relieve pent-up demand for connectivity from the many users in Africa beyond range of fixed and mobile terrestrial networks.”

Several companies already provide internet-by-satellite, but it is a costly option beyond the reach of most people in the developing world.

President Barack has expressed his frustrations following yet another mass shooting targeted at a learning institution in the US. The shooting which took place on Thursday morning at around 10:38 a.m. at the Umpqua Community College  in Roseburg, Oregon left ten people dead and seven others wounded ;a figure that was revised downward from an earlier death toll which was pegged at 13.

According to US media outlets, the gunman identified as Chris Harper Mercer ,26,is said to have been armed with three handguns and an assault weapon.US security officials who spoke to CNN also said that the gunman appeared to have been ready for a fight as he had a body armor and a stash of ammunition on him.

During a press conference at The White House, President Obama however expressed his disappointment by what he termed as lack of political goodwill by members of the Congress to adopt counter gun violence legislation in a bid to tame the rising incidents of mass shootings in the country.

Obama warned that prayer alone and empty rhetoric will not help the situation challenging the media to come out strongly on the matter and question Congressmen for their hard line position on the matter. “I hope and pray that I don’t have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my condolences … but based on my experiences as president I can’t guarantee that,” the president added. “And that’s terrible to say. And it can change.”

Meanwhile, authorities have cordoned off a Winchester, Oregon, apartment complex which according to initial investigative reports is said to have been listed as Mercer’s address. The neighbours could not hide their unbelief though on the news as most described him as a calm man. An old neighbour who spoke to The Huffington Post  is quoted saying, “Chris was kind of reserved, kept to himself mostly.”

But even as security officials continue to grapple with what has now famously come to be known as “gun violence”, it remains unclear on what measures the Obama administration will take to tame the vice even as the president appears to be admitting to have lost the war. This even as the incident brings to 45, the number of shooting incidents at learning institutions so far this year.
