The University of Nairobi will be hosting the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) for the second time in it’s history since it last hosted the tourney in 1978.The tournament which brings together universities from across the African nations to represent their countries was first held in 1974 in Accra,Ghana.The 2012 edition was held in in 2012 in Windhoek, Namibia.
Among counties that have confirmed participation include;Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa and Kenya the host nation.The event which will be jointly hosted by Federation of African University Sports (FASU) in conjunction with the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) ,will run from 11th to 18th, July, 2014 at the University of Nairobi sports grounds.Some of the field events will however be taking place at the Safaricom Kasarani stadium.
Activities at the University of Nairobi hostels,where participants will be hosted was on high gear early in the morning as all efforts were made to upgrade sanitary conditions.The cleaners were until 10.00 am today scribing walls and floors in most of the halls,a task they began at the break of dawn.
Participants will be battling it out in Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Handball, Karate, Netball, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae kwo Do, Tennis, Track and Field Athletes, and Volleyball.
The unveiling of the logo, the mascot, and the theme for the games is currently ongoing in the publicity campaign and fundraising at the University of Nairobi Sports Grounds (Chancellor’s Court) .The event which was scheduled for 10.00am is expected to be led by FASU President of FASU Dr. Ralethe Malumbete, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. George Magoha and the Local Organizing Committee.
The theme of the games is Peace and Solidarity in Africa through University Sports.
